Silver Age Yoga with Frank and Serpil Iszak
The Style of Silver Age Yoga
The vast majority of Americans are growing into their golden years, 70+, and beginning to experience the physical effects of aging. It is becoming imperative that Yoga Teachers learn to adapt their classes to safeguard the health of their Senior students. This lecture presents a history and overview of Silver Age Yoga, a Hatha Yoga practice based on principles of gerontology, developed by scientists and Yoga practitioners. Silver Age Yoga places emphasis on the prevention and delay of the onset of common Senior health issues. Students will explore Yoga postures relevant to specific senior-related health issues, their benefits and contraindications, and learn how to teach a typical Silver Age Yoga class.
About Frank and Serpil Iszak
Because the Iszaks recognized a need for a different type of Yoga that would meet the special health needs of seniors, they designed an entirely new style of Yoga based upon the principles of geriatric science, which emphasizes the health- enhancing benefits. San Diego county Yoga teachers supported this vision by donating time to the project, and health professionals from institutions such as Scripps, UCSD, and SIRA (Stein Institute of Research on Aging) offered their support by becoming faculty members of a scientific team to bring Yoga and gerontology under the same roof. Thus Silver Age Yoga was born.
